MEMORANDUM OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM MR. GAGIK SAHAKYAN - MAYOR OF SPITAK
The 30th anniversary and Remembrance Day of the Spitak Earthquake is soon approaching.
On December 7th, 1988 Spitak- once a young, vibrant and fastly developing industrial town- was completely destroyed within seconds. People lost their families, their homes, their livelihoods, but not their hope. Bearing their losses and pain in their heart, people stayed on their land to rise, to rebuild, to recover and to create new opportunities in our town.
In those horrible days the whole world united, people understood each other, they combined their efforts and passed the most severe trial. Nations from all around the world offered us a helping hand and made Spitak a land of human solidarity and sympathy. The names of Spitak’s residential neighborhoods are a living proof and symbol of friendship between nations.
I would like to express a word of gratitute and acknowledgement on my behalf and on behalf of the whole community of Spitak, to all nations and governments, to organizations and individuals for supporting us, for giving us hope, faith and inspiration, for being there on a difficult moment, for offering us a helping hand, for their humanity, for the mitigation of the consequences of this disaster, and for reconstructing the town and providing an invaluable support in our development.
I wish that all people and nations live in a peaceful and secure world.
With best regards and anticipation for future cooperation opportunities,
MAYOR OF SPITAK GAGIK SAHAKYAN
